East Cambridge & Kendall Square

East Cambride and Kendall Square

East Cambridge and nearby Kendall Square form one of the world’s leading life-science and technology-driven innovation districts.

In Kendall Square, the modern biotechnology industry took shape in the late 1970s, and the area supports a dense concentration of global bio-pharmaceutical, laboratory, and research organizations.Today the neighborhood counts more than 250 biotech and pharma companies - over 120 inside the Kendall Square zip code alone - now joined by software, AI, and quantum-computing firms.

And it is still expanding within the same square mile. On the 14-acre former Volpe federal site, MIT is raising Kendall Common - illustrated above -  a new district of roughly 1,400 homes, labs and offices anchored by Biogen’s next global headquarters, parks, and a community center, opening from 2028.
